Explore Farming in Nova Scotia: From honeybees to maple trees

Produced and published through Communications Nova Scotia for the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculure

August 2014

Task -- to create a book about farming in Nova Scotia as it is done in 2014

Target audience -- Nova Scotian school children in grade 4 and children visiting farms and farm exhibitions around the province.

Scope -- The book had to conform to the math, science, and social science curricula for grade 4 Nova Scotia students and have an interactive component, that is, it had to give students something to do with the information or point them to further learning. At the same time the book had to give a snapshot of each of 15 agricultural industries in Nova Scotia. Finally the copy had to fit with the multitude of photographic and illustrative visuals.

Resources -- I was provided with content for each of the 15 agricultural industries to be covered in book. The information in the book had to be prioritized as there was too much for the size of the book. There was also considerable back-and-forth between me and project coordinator Judy D. Grant to get the copy just right.

There is more information about this book on the Teachers' Resources page of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture web site.

Hard copies of the book are available from the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and through the Book Bureau of the Nova Scotia Department of Education.
